One of the most satisfying things for us at KFE is getting to know our ever-growing family of people passionate about the industry. With almost 40 years experience between them, Craig and Nikki of Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth have some rich and exciting #fishandchipmemories to share with us.
“I’ve been in fish and chips for 22 years, and Nikki for 15 years, and in 2012 we had the opportunity for a management buyout and we jumped at the chance. With only just enough money for our first potato delivery we opened the doors of Kingfisher Fish & Chips.
Fish and chips are very evocative and everyone has a fond memory associated with them. When I was a young boy, Saturday lunchtime was time for our chippy treat. I would walk a three-mile round trip to pick up haddock and chips to eat at home. Being originally from Sheffield, the bonus for me was a sneaky Yorkshire fishcake on the walk back. I do miss them and when possible; try to have one when in Yorkshire!
Along our journey we kept using a phrase ‘that is the best thing we have done’. Our journey has included picking up many industry and non-industry awards, culminating in becoming National Champions and being crowned the UK’s No.1 Fish & Chip Shop at the National Fish & Chip awards in 2017. We still get emotional now when we watch the video of us collecting the trophy.
We love fish and chips and the fact that it really is the nation’s favourite dish. We have made some very good friends that have been invaluable to our shop and us as individuals. We also love getting involved, seeing our friends and meeting new people.”
