Quayside in Whitby, North Yorkshire, has been crowned the best UK fish and chip shop after ‘battering’ its rivals in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2014 on 22 January. The shop, run by the Fusco family and represented by brothers Stuart and Adrian Fusco, was today announced as Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2014 by awards host, professional and TV Michelin star chef, Jean-Christophe Novelli at a prestigious ceremony at London’s Lancaster London hotel.
Quayside also won the ‘Marketing Innovation Award’ after industry judges agreed that they demonstrated great focus and innovative thinking in marketing and promoting their business. Kiremko customer and Winner Stuart Fusco of Quayside said: “I cannot tell you how immensely proud we are to have won and be named as the best Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop in the UK! We are a family business that has worked really hard to get to this point and we couldn’t have done that without the amazing team we have around us.
“A great deal of time goes into running our business, from working with our local suppliers to ensure all of our raw ingredients are traceable, sustainable and natural, developing our staff and ensuring we have a great product to sell to our loyal customers. From my humble beginnings as the Young Fish Frier of the Year in 2004 to now winning the flagship award as part of the 2014 National Fish & Chip Awards, we are so pleased that all of our efforts have been rewarded.”
The top ten finalists, representing respective parts of the UK, were pitted against each other during the final stage of competition judging, in the race for the coveted title. All faced a rigorous judging process over the past few months, culminating in presentations to a panel of industry judges in London in a Dragon’s Den style pitch. Frankie’s Fish and Chips in Brae, Shetland earned second place, while Papa’s Barn in Ditton, Kent came third.
The final 10 places were competitively sought following earlier judging rounds which included unannounced shop visits from industry judges. Shops were assessed on a wide variety of judging criteria including product quality, customer service, food preparation procedures, hygiene, innovation, staff training and development, marketing and promotional activity, and approaches to sustainable sourcing.
Organised by Seafish, the authority on seafood, the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award recognises the wealth of quality, value and choice offered by the nation’s much loved independent fish and chip shops serving up the UK’s ‘national dish’. While there are no big cash prizes up for grabs at the awards ceremony, winning the title has in the past resulted in sales increases of up to 100 per cent for the winning shop.
Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, said: “Every year we see a wealth of new and established talent vie for the top title, and the competition gets fiercer each year as a result. This year was no exception and the judges were faced with a particularly tricky job in determining a winner. “Quayside stood out for their commitment and determination throughout the entire judging process and we’d like to congratulate them in taking the top accolade.
Now in their 26th year, the National Fish & Chip Awards continue to be the most prestigious industry event for anyone involved in sourcing, producing and selling the UK’s most iconic dish.
The Fusco family joins 14 other previous Kiremko customers who have also won this award, each time Kiremko continues to cope and exceed expectations.

KFE School of Frying Excellence are proud to sponsor these awards which provide a great platform for media activity/PR opportunities for individual entrants and the fish and chip sector as a whole. There are great media opportunities to be gained by shops by just participating. The Awards also provide a benchmark for business development and can be a strong motivational tool for staff.
We are no ordinary training academy. Our training team of Nigel Hodgson, Mark Petrou and Gordon Hillan are all previous National Fish & Chip Shop of the Year winners and our premises are purpose-built to the highest standards of design and hygiene, incorporating only the very best equipment and ingredients. We are proud to have trained some fantastic friers, including all 3 Winners of the Young Frier Award, Regional Finalist Chris Richardson from Richardson’s and Staff Training and Development winners Harbourside Phil and Sarah. Our trainers Mark Petrou and Nigel Hodgson were also finalists so well done to all.
KFE is committed to the development and support of the young friers within our industry and continues to support them. In 2012 we took them over to the QBTEC factory in Holland to see where the Kiremko and Perfecta ranges are manufactured along with Dutch style cafeterias and fish shops. In 2013 we hosted a day at The KFE School of Frying Excellence for the group with new trainer, Garry Rosser also on hand to show them the grilling side of the industry. We look to continue the support in 2014….
