Up until a few months ago Pier 1 in trendy Camden, London, was a tapas bar, however, when the tenants didn’t pay the rent, owner Olgun Remzi saw the opportunity to take it back and open an upmarket fish and chip restaurant. In doing so, he totally refurbished the shop, which included installing a new range. “We have very high quality standards here – we buy only the best and use only the best and that extends to the range,” says Olgun. “We wanted something modern and fashionable, a break from what you normally see in fish and chip shops. Kiremko offered a range that looked different to the standard.” To cope with the demands of the busy 80 seater restaurant and takeaway, Pier 1 now boasts a stunning 4-pan counter range complete with two chip boxes, griddle and heated cabinets. A stainless steel front panel with blue downlighters complements the restaurant’s colour scheme and completes the classy look Pier 1 was aspiring to. “It’s very efficient, which not only saves us money but also means it’s very quick at getting up to the right temperature. That’s something that is very important to us as we get extremely busy,” continues Olgun. The restaurant’s master frier, Mustafa has spent many years in the industry and has worked on many different ranges. He comments: “It’s a really good quality piece of kit and it works perfectly. The heat up and recovery time is great and the quality of the fish and chips is brilliant.” Other features that the new chippy is finding invaluable are the built in oil filtration and the ease of cleaning. “It’s great not worrying about filtering the oil at the end of the day and it’s so straight forward to clean. You literally just take it apart and put it back together again,” remarks Olgun. “We’re looking to open another shop shortly in Haymarket and we will definitely be speaking to Kiremko again.” FACTS 1 Pier 1 specialises in grilled and fried fish with customers having a choice of cod, halibut, haddock, plaice, skate and dover sole Fry Monthly - January 2010. |
