The record for the world’s largest portion of chips has been broken at Adventure Island in Southend.

Wednesday 6th July, 2011

Southend's Adventure Island broke their 3rd World Record on Thursday 30th June at the theme park's Traditional Fish and Chip Shop on their Kiremko frying range. The Guiness World Record was previously set in Hereford back in 2004 of 79kg.

Five staff from the Traditional Fish & Chip Shop worked for four hours, peeling, chipping and frying £150 worth of potatoes so that they were able to beat the record by piling 448kg of chips into a giant chip box at the theme park.

Head of catering, and one of the five-man team, James Gibbs said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s taken a long while, many months to plan it. It’s wonderful. It’s something that from when we were kids at school we used to dream about breaking a Guinness World Record.”

The event was in aid of raising funds for Southends hospital's Bosom Pals breast cancer appeal, visitors where able to buy a cone of the record-breaking chips afterwards for £1. The remainder are reportedly being sent to a local farm, where they will be fed to a heard of pigs, congratulations to you all.
